Carpet Wrinkles Explained (Page 3)

Ten Common Causes Revealed!

Cause #3  Low Quality Carpet

Some homeowners buy the absolute cheapest carpet and padding they can find. That's fine, but if you do, you can't expect it to look like new for long. If you plan to sell your home soon or if you have serious pet urine problems, then going the cheapest route may be the smartest way to go.

Most apartment owners and property management companies go the cheap route. They just want the lowest cost and plan to replace it often. But you can’t expect high quality performance from a low-quality carpet. To expect more from your new carpet then you need to pay more to obtain a better grade.

  • What grade of carpet do you need to meet your expectations?

  • How long do you want your new carpet to last?

Not sure what carpet you need? Take my free Carpet Foot-Traffic Test to see what grade of carpet you should select and learn about how much you need to spend to get it. Then print up and use my Carpet Durability Chart. That will help you make wise choices.

Any low-quality carpet installed over a cheap pad will quickly start to mat down and develop wrinkles. In this situation, it is doubtful that you will have any recourse with your new carpet warranty. You can try… but in the end, I doubt any carpet manufacturers or carpet dealers will come to your rescue. When they visit your home to inspect the carpet, it will be very obvious that you selected a carpet that was incapable of tolerating your level of foot traffic. Claim Denied!

Carpet Wrinkles?

Ten Common Causes Revealed!

Cause #4  Builder Grade Carpet

No matter what the grade or quality level, any carpet can develop wrinkles for any number of reasons. New home builders are notorious for cutting corners to save time and money. Sometimes they hire inexperienced carpet installers who do a lousy job.

Carpet does not stretch in easy when it is cold. Sometimes new home builders have the carpet installed without having any heat in the building. If your carpet was installed on a cold day and you find wrinkles showing up after a hot summer day, then this could easily be the cause of your carpet wrinkles.

Carpet must be installed during reasonably warm temperatures, I suggest at least 70 degrees or higher. Turn up the heat! Personally I prefer to install carpet in rooms with at least 75 to 80 degrees. Carpet stretches in so much better and easier when the room is warm.

Most builder-grade carpets are lower quality and are designed to last for 3 to 5 years at best. An upgraded carpet might last for 5 to 7 years. Most homeowners end up unhappy with the builder-grade carpet they receive and are eager to replace it after a year or two. Frankly, the carpet builders typically install is a very low-grade and poor quality.

Personally, when having a new home built, I would not choose to upgrade the carpet or pad and just plan on replacing the carpet and padding in about two or three years. In most cases, your contract with the builder says you must buy from their sources and this gives you a limited budget and options.

If you can, instead of buying from your builders sources, ask for an allowance and buy from a dealer of your choice and add some more money to get the carpet and padding that will meet your needs and goals. You can also have it installed by the installer of your choice. It will cost you more, but you will be happier with the end result.

Cause #5  Carpet Abuse

Rolling or pushing heavy objects across the carpet.

Wheelchairs, scooters and handcarts can easily cause your carpet to stretch out and form wrinkles. Residential carpet installed over padding is not designed to tolerate wheelchairs, office chairs or motorized carts.

Even those who use a walker can cause severe carpet damage in a short period of time. Virtually anything with wheels can quickly cause irreparable damage to your carpet. When it comes to wheeled office chairs, even a good quality plastic chair pad may not be enough to prevent carpet damage over time.

If you need to move your furniture around, you need to lift it, not slide it. If it is too heavy to lift, put down some boards or something to help it slide easily without harming the carpet.

Cause # Heavy Rolling

New Appliances or Furniture Delivered Recently?

Reputable appliance dealers will never roll, push or drag anything heavy across your carpet. The same goes for piano movers and furniture stores.

When they come to deliver your new kitchen appliances, like a new washer and dryer or refrigerator, they should never bring it in on a wheeled hand-truck and simply roll it across your new carpet on the way to your kitchen or laundry room.

Anything heavy or large should be unboxed outside and then lifted manually and set into place or put down wooden slats or boards if they absolutely have to roll it in over the top of the carpet.
