Carpet Cleaning Cost

How much should it cost to clean my carpet?

If it’s been several years since your last professional carpet cleaning then your carpets are likely quite dirty and may require some special attention.

The price you’ll be charged depends on the age and condition of your carpet and the amount of time and effort it will take to do the job right.

The dirtier your carpet is, the more it's going to cost to have it cleaned properly. If you haven’t had your carpet cleaned in several years, no matter who you call it’s going to take some extra time and effort to do the job properly.

Don’t expect miracle results from discount carpet cleaning services.

If your carpets are in serious need of a thorough deep-cleaning, don’t go searching for a Coupon that says “Two Rooms Cleaned for $29.99!” You probably won’t be happy with the results from a light surface cleaning.

Some companies are notorious for luring you in with an amazing low price special, but once they get a good look at your carpet, will present you with a much higher quote. You don’t need this type of aggravation! But you should be prepared to pay a reasonable and fair price.

Carpet Cleaning Cost 2023

Prices on this scale range from 15 cents to 65 cents per square foot depending on the level of carpet dirtiness. My Dirt Meter can give you a basic idea about how much it might cost to have your carpet cleaned by a certified professional carpet cleaning service near you.

Carpet Cleaning Cost and Dirt Meter | Carpet Professor

Average Cost to Clean Carpet? The dirtier your carpet, the longer it will take to clean it. Be prepared to pay more if your carpet hasn't been professionally cleaned in quite a while. Expect the price to be on the higher end of the scale.

If you have your carpets professionally cleaned every 12 to 18 months like you are supposed to, then your cost should be on the lower end of the scale. That's because it will not take as long to get the job done.

If you haven't had your carpets professionally cleaned in many years, or if you have pet urine issues to deal with, don't be surprised when the estimate is twice or three times over this scale.

All service companies must charge a reasonable fee or they won’t be able to stay in business. If it will take twice as long to thoroughly clean your dirty carpet then expect the job to be priced accordingly.

One Room Cost Example:

A common bedroom size is 10’ X 14’ = 140 square feet.

  • At 18 cents per square foot - Total cost about $25.00 (Carpet doesn’t appear dirty)

  • At 28 cents per square foot - Total cost about $40.00 (Carpet looks fairly dirty)

  • At 36 cents per square foot - Total cost about $50.00 (Carpet is definitely dirty)

  • At 56 cents per square foot - Total cost about $80.00 (Carpet is VERY dirty!)

There is always a minimum charge which might be more than $100. So plan to have several rooms cleaned or have them steam clean a few area rugs or some furniture while they are there. Most companies offer many other types of cleaning services in addition to carpet steam cleaning.

Some companies prefer to charge by the room or by the job. It still ends up being pretty close to the same price as it would be if calculated by the square foot. If you know about how many square feet you need to have cleaned it will be easy for you to calculate an approximate cost.

Whole House Cost Example:

Most 2-bedroom ranch-style homes are about 1000 square feet. This typically includes a living room, dining room, family room, hallway and two bedrooms.

  • At 18 cents per square foot - Total cost about $180.00 (Carpet doesn’t appear dirty)

  • At 28 cents per square foot - Total cost about $280.00 (Carpet looks fairly dirty)

  • At 36 cents per square foot - Total cost about $360.00 (Carpet is definitely dirty)

  • At 56 cents per square foot - Total cost about $560.00 (Carpet is VERY dirty!)

It's not a scam for a professional carpet cleaner to charge you according to your carpet's degree of dirtiness.

Carpet Care and Maintenance

It's up to you to make sure your carpet is maintained and cared for according to the carpet manufacturer's recommended guidelines. Failure to do so will void your new carpet warranty and likely cause your carpet to wear out prematurely.

Carpet Vacuum - Carpet Professor

Regular vacuuming and professional cleanings every 12 to 18 months is required to keep your new carpet warranty in force. Frequent vacuuming, and regular professional cleanings is the key to keeping your carpet looking like new as long as possible! Learn more about the best Carpet Vacuums.

Have your carpets cleaned before they start to look dirty.

Abrasion is what causes carpet to look ugly and worn out. If you wait too long between cleanings, your carpet can become permanently damaged from the ravages of abrasion.

Dirt and grime can easily cause abrasive wear that cannot be undone. Once you reach this point there is nothing any carpet cleaner can do to restore the “like-new” appearance your carpet once had.

Sure, you can have your carpets thoroughly cleaned, but you won’t be happy with the way your carpet looks when it’s all said and done.

What is a Maintenance Plan?

A Carpet Cleaning Maintenance Plan is a special price for purchasing future cleanings in advance at a discounted price. Perhaps they offer four cleanings for the price of three or three cleanings for the price of two.

Your new carpet warranty requires periodic cleaning. You're going to need your carpet cleaned again anyway so why not purchase a bundle and save some money.

I think it is a very smart move and you have the option of setting the date and time when it is most convenient for you.

You will save money in the long run, your carpet will last years longer, your home will always look nice and will be a healthier place to you and your family to thrive.

Carpet Cleaning Extra Fees

Some carpet stains need special treatment and require extra time, treatment and effort. You should expect pre-treatment of most spots and stains to be included as part of the basic price.

In some cases, especially with pet accidents or biological spills and stains there may be an extra charge. It’s impossible to predict how much extra it might be without knowing the type of stain, size and disposition of the affected area.

Carpet Damage, Restoration and Repairs

Many Carpet Technicians are trained to repair or restore your damaged carpet. Carpet is often damaged from floods, accidents, burns or pets, but may be fixed by a competent carpet tech.

Some spots and stains are impossible to clean but other options may be available. In some cases, depending on the type of carpet you have, carpet dyeing may restore the color to a faded or bleached out area.

Areas with burns or snags can be cut out and replaced with leftover carpet or by using the same carpet taken from a “less critical” area (like a closet).

Some carpets may need to be re-stretched or reinstalled due to wrinkles or waves. The cost for these extra services will depend on your situation. Carpet Wrinkles? 10 Most Common Causes Revealed

If the repair cost is too high or if the carpet is not repairable you will have to decide if it's time to start thinking about buying new carpet. Should I Clean or Replace My Carpet?
